I've lived in Cochise County for 23 years, and worked as a carpenter and an oilfield hand and a writer and a bartender and a guide and a group home councilor and a miner, in addition to some stints in supervision, industrial safety, politics, and management (among other things) which helped me to develop a somewhat broader viewpoint regarding the County and it's issues than some people hold. The population of the County is remarkably diverse, as are some of the primary issues and concerns of the citizens, and I'm pretty sure that the next four years are going to be filled with challenges and proposals that are going to require careful study, deliberate thought, and lots and lots of public input if we want to establish consensus for any action that we might take.
That in a nutshell is why I've decided to run for District Supervisor; I'm as tired as anyone of local Government that seems to work from the top down to dictate policy to the electorate when it ought to be the other way around, and even though I'd much rather be horseback in the Chiricahuas I know that public service requires someone to sacrifice themselves for the common good, and it looks to me as though my turn has come to step forward if that's what the people of District II think that they want.
Or they can cast a vote for a name on a yard sign, although it seems to be an act of faith more than an informed choice.
